The Civic Music Association kicks off its 85th season with a performance by famed violinist and composer Mark O’Connor and his Appalachia Waltz Trio on Friday, Sept. 18 at 7:30 p.m. at Drake University’s Sheslow Auditorium. Several new shows to be held at People’s Court have been announced. They include Soulfly on Oct. 12, $18; Matisyahu on Oct. 29, $23 (tickets on sale Friday, Sept. 18); Saosin with P.O.S. on Nov. 17, $15; Minus the Bear on Nov. 22, $16; and Brett Dennen with Grace Potter and the Nocturnals on Dec. 1, $18.

The Community Jazz Center will induct saxophonist-arranger Frank Perowsky and bassist-singer-educator Susie Miget into the Des Moines Jazz Hall of Fame when it hosts its ninth annual Hall of Fame reception and concert on Oct. 25 at Adventureland Inn in Altoona. Other local people and organizations will also be honored that night for their contributions, including saxophonist-educator- bandleader John Morgan; the Talerico family, whose restaurants have featured jazz for two generations in Des Moines; and drummer Ben Poppen, who will receive the Bobby Dawson Award for his work with the CJC-sponsored student jam session. After having spent six years with Calous, drummer Joey Corigliano has left the Des Moines hard rock band to fulfill family obligations. He said he plans to continue to play with his other bands the Dum Fux, Deuce and Pretty Noose. … In other Calous news, bassist Harlan “Harpo” Dunaway and his wife, Day, have founded their own design business, Corrosive Company.
Local musician Chris Ford, formerly of Stuck With Arthur, new band Christopher the Conquered, includes a three-piece horn section. The group will release an album next month.
