The Good

Flu season is in full swing. and the Polk County Health Department is in full force to try to stop the spread of — and hysteria over — H1N1, otherwise known as the Swine Flu. The Polk County Health Department is expected to receive its initial shipment of H1N1 vaccine late next week. The 1,350 doses of Flu Mist will be dispersed on a walk-in basis at 1907 Carpenter Ave.

Arizona Mixed Martial Arts (MMA) fighter Matt Betzold had his left leg amputated below the knee when he was six years old. Last week at the Rage in the Cage event in Phoenix, Ariz., Betzold became the second person with a disability to fight in an MMA event. But that was only part of the celebration. Betzold became the first fighter with a disability to win an MMA fight by submitting his opponent to tap out, proving that hard work makes anything possible.

The Bad

Craig Bell and William Orris tried unsuccessfully to beat the system. And now the two Iowa State University sophomores will pay the price. Bell and Orris, both 20, tampered with accounting records so it appeared they had paid about $1,200 in parking tickets. According to ISU police reports, Orris allegedly fixed 64 tickets worth more than $1,000, and Bell allegedly fixed 15 tickets worth less than $200. Both were front-desk clerks who sold parking permits and worked the cash register in the campus parking division. Orris faces up to five years in prison and fines from a felony charge of second-degree fraudulent practices. Bell faces up to 30 days in jail and fines from a simple misdemeanor charge of fifth-degree fraudulent practices.

Thanks for nothing International Olympic Committee. Chicago, which was considered a frontrunner for the 2016 Olympics, was eliminated in the first ballot of voting last week, with Rio de Janeiro taking the honor of hosting the Games. When two of the biggest figures in pop culture, President Barack Obama and TV queen Oprah Winfrey, can’t help the cause, it may have been a defeat from the beginning. Detractors will now have extra ammunition to use against Obama, since he became the first president to lobby in person at a bid city vote, despite this being a time when his country is more worried about health care than hosting an athletic event. South America has never hosted the Games before, and we wonder if Rio de Janeiro is the right place. Sure it has a beautiful beach, but it’s also one of the most crime-ridden areas in the world. We know Chicago is not the safest place either, but in 2007, the Rio de Janeiro homicide rate was 30 victims a week. Three years ago, 2,273 people were murdered. We would like to have seen the slogan, “Welcome to Chicago, Try a Slice of Pizza,” rather than, “Welcome to Rio de Janeiro, Hope You Don’t Get Mugged.”

The Ugly

Jonas Neiderbach and Jherica Richardson will have to wait until next year to learn their fate, as both parents are accused on multiple counts of child endangerment after their baby nearly died this summer. The couple, both 20, waived their right to a speedy trial last week. Ethan Neiderbach, who suffered multiple broken bones and brain injuries, was brought unresponsive to a hospital on July 8. A juvenile judge is expected to decide in February who should parent the baby. We hope 2010 brings justice to the parents and a new beginning for Ethan.

Why don’t you pick on someone your own size? Timothy Lange of New Albin has been sentenced to four years in prison after pleading guilty to federal and state charges in connection with the shooting death of a puppy. Lange and a friend stole a dog carrier containing a puppy. Lange became angry at the dog and killed the defenseless animal with a shotgun. Lange was charged with third-degree theft, animal abuse, animal torture and reckless use of a firearm. During sentencing last week, the judge called Lange a danger to the community. We call him a loser. CV
