Absentee ballots are available for the city elections to be held in Polk County on Nov. 3. The Polk County Election Office, 120 2nd Ave., is open 8 a.m. to 5 p.m., Monday through Friday. The deadline to request an absentee ballot is Oct. 30, and ballots must be postmarked by Nov. 2. Polling hours for the Nov. 3 city elections will be from 7 a.m. to 8 p.m. Absentee ballots can be found at http://auditor.co.polk.ia.us/election.htm.


Celebrate food in East Village

The fifth annual U.S. Cellular World Food Festival will take place from Friday, Oct. 9 to Sunday, Oct. 11 in downtown Des Moines’ East Village. The festival will celebrate Iowa’s unique and diverse culinary traditions. Hours are Friday and Saturday from 11 a.m. to 10 p.m.; and Sunday from 11 a.m. to 5 p.m. Admission is free. Get spooked this month

Sleepy Hollow’s Haunted Scream Park, 4051 Dean Ave., will be open Friday, Oct. 9 and Saturday, Oct. 10 for thrill seekers. The 13-acre park features three haunted houses, a haunted walk and haystack ride. The park will also be open Oct. 16-17, 22-25 and 29-31. Temple of Performing Arts hosts author

Donald Miller, author of New York Times bestseller “Blue Like Jazz” will visit the Temple of the Performing Arts, 1011 Locust St., on Sunday, Oct. 11 to promote his new book “ A Million Miles in a Thousand Years: What I Learned While Editing My Life.” Tickets are $15 per person.
