CONCERT REVIEW

Trevor Hall and Matisyahu
People’s Court, Oct. 29

People’s Court was filled with the youngest and oldest fans I’ve ever seen at the same show to see singer/songwriter Trevor Hall and the original Hasidic Jewish rapper, Matisyahu. Unfortunately, Trevor Hall was stuck at the airport and couldn’t make the show, which didn’t seem to dampen the crowd’s spirit. (Hall would have played here for the third time in as many months.) Instead, the crowd enjoyed three members of Matisyahu’s touring band, also known as the Dub Trio. Their set was as much death metal as it was dub, a weird combination going from thrashing to soothing, but the band made it work. They also played their own interpretations of a few Trevor Hall songs including “Lime Tree.” After their set, Matisyahu took stage to an overwhelming response. After only a couple songs, Matisyahu gave thanks to the crowd and said after the warm welcome he received at the 80/35 Festival this summer, he knew he had to come back. Matisyahu had the crowd hyped as they sang along, waving their hands in the air. He played a number of songs including “One Day” from his newest album, “Light,” and classics like “Jerusalem.” His mixture of dub, reggae, hip-hop and funk weaved through his entire set. He even demonstrated his beat boxing skills. The show was better than his 80/35 performance (maybe because its more intimate setting), but I still felt let down afterwards. I’ll have to listen to his “Live at Stubb’s” disc to feel that magic again. CV — Jared Curtis
