MUSIC
By Chad Taylor
Another summer is drawing to a close, and man
was it fun. From acts at the Iowa State Fair
and Blank Park Zoo, to events at just about
every winery, bar, park and venue in town, there
was a bunch to listen to over the past three
months. Now as the summer months slip behind
us and we ease into autumn, it’s time to take
a break, right? Not on your cotton-pickin’ life!
All of Des Moines’ sweet, live-music action
simply moves indoors and keeps right on walking
through the turning of the leaves. Hopefully
you took advantage of the summer weather to
go out and experience live music in some great
outdoor venues, like Gray’s Lake, or the excellent
Nitefall on the River series. Now, use this
fall guide to take some chances. Drive a carload
of friends up to Ames and see what’s playing
at DG’s or the M-Shop. Or head downtown and
check out some
metal at House of Bricks, or some indie at
Vaudeville Mews, or even some polka over at
Hessen Haus. There’s so much great music being
made in town that you’ve probably never heard
of, and most places get you in the door for
the price of a drink, so you can afford to gamble
now and then. And keep picking up Cityview:
This list is not meant to be definitive, and
we’ll be keeping it updated with shows as they
come.
