Let’s celebrate beer
Please forgive the Homer Simpson
reference in the headline on the
cover. We couldn’t resist. But
even Homer knows a good thing
when he sees it. And this is good.
We here at Cityview aren’t much
into the wine thing. Or the fufu
drinks. Or the fancy martinis.
We like beer, and we know you
do, too. So let’s get together
and celebrate what we like. We
thought Brewfest sounded like
a great idea last year when we
were looking for a reason to celebrate
our paper’s 15th anniversary.
We think it sounds even better
now.
My father taught me long ago
that if you want to do things
right, you need to learn from
the experts. And there are few
people in Des Moines who know
more about beer than our friend
Jeff Bruning at Full Court Press.
Jeff, along with Mindy Toyne,
helped us turn Brewfest into a
real attraction for the city.
At the inaugural Brewfest last
year, I expected a fraternity
house atmosphere. I was clearly
wrong and was pleased to find
myself surrounded by beer connoisseurs
of all ages and backgrounds. This
week’s cover story is a tribute
to the production of beer and
home brewers across the metro.
It is an informative read that
will give you an even deeper appreciation
for the science of brewing and
what makes a beer taste so good.
A close friend of mine defines
golf as a good reason to drink
beer outdoors. The same can be
said for Brewfest. So show some
respect for America’s favorite
beverage and join us in a full
fledge salute this Saturday in
downtown Des Moines. Look inside
for all the details.
Thanks for reading.
